For example, a person may present a range of anorexic behaviours but appear to maintain a healthy weight, despite significant and sudden weight loss.
EDNOS conditions are serious and potentially life-threatening and require treatment.
What is OSFED?
Both EDNOS and OSFED refer to behavioural, physical, and psychological symptoms of other eating disorders; but an individual's disorder profile doesn't match the expected criteria for a full diagnosis.
These conditions are often more challenging to spot in ourselves or others because the symptoms often appear in subtle ways that may be overlooked.
How might these conditions manifest?
An individual may present a range of behaviours associated with bulimia and, regardless of significant and sudden weight loss, their current weight falls within the "normal" range for their height and build.
Or perhaps a person binges and purges infrequently, or they chew large quantities of few excessively before spitting it out.
If somebody engages in regular weight-controlling behaviours such as starving, bingeing, purging, or chewing and spitting out - but they don't present all of the expected behaviours for a specific condition - they may fall under the EDNOS category.
How would I be diagnosed for an EDNOS condition?
Like all eating disorders, a condition is unlikely to be diagnosed unless the individual has recognised that there is a problem.
People throughout the spectrum of eating disorders are often adept at hiding their damaging behaviours, making it difficult to diagnose their condition until the individual is prepared to face the problem for themselves.
Our integrative approach focuses on the needs of the individual. We recognise that there's no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" solution - and we understand that therapy of any kind takes a considerable degree of bravery to consider.
We start with talking, and we piece together a profile of the individual condition while discussing appropriate approaches to treatment.
